Santhy Santiago makes a mark in the Middle East art community

Santhy Santiago pursued Fine Arts with a focus on Advertising Arts at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. This program not only equipped him with essential skills in traditional artistic techniques but also emphasized the principles of visual communication and design. He grew up in an environment where comic books and newspapers were a significant part of his daily life, and selling them became one of his earliest sources of inspiration. Driven by his fascination with art, he embarked on a self-guided journey to learn how to draw human figures. He meticulously studied the illustrations and artwork in various comics and magazines, noting the details that brought characters to life on the page. He was particularly interested in how they used lines, shading, and color to evoke feelings and tell stories. In addition to his studies at home, he frequently visited the vibrant neighborhoods of Mabini and Ermita, areas renowned for their artistic communities. There, he encountered many talented artists who gathered to paint and create. He found great joy in watching these artists at work. Each visit deepened his appreciation for the craft. The artists who influenced him the most were Philippine National Artists Cesar Legaspi and Vicente Manansala. He greatly admired their mastery of form, composition, and storytelling in art. His artistic style, which blends modern cubism with figurative subjects, reflects the inspiration he drew from these two masters. Additionally, his family played a significant role in supporting his talent and encouraging him to pursue a formal education in Fine Arts. Looking back, he acknowledges that his inspiration came from various sources — observing other artists, studying illustrations, and his deep love for drawing from a very young age. More than any single artist, he has always drawn inspiration from the beauty of life, the people around him, and the belief that art is a gift from God. Santiago began his professional journey as a Graphic Artist in Makati. After gaining a solid foundation of experience in his role, he opted to explore new opportunities and broaden his horizons. This decision led him to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Working abroad not only enhanced Santiago’s professional skill set but also expanded his cultural understanding and artistic perspective. He was exposed to diverse artistic styles and techniques, enriching his design approach and significantly influencing his growth as both an artist and a designer. This invaluable experience set the stage for his future endeavors in the creative industry. Santiago is a proud member of several organizations, including the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP), the Artipolo Artist Group, and various artist communities in Abu Dhabi. Throughout his career, Santiago’s artworks have been showcased in numerous exhibitions across diverse venues, including Manila, Antipolo, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and several other locations. He believes every opportunity to display his work is more than just an exhibition; it is a moment to learn from other artists, engage with audiences, and deepen his understanding of his craft. Santiago received Best in Thematic Expression award during the 119th Philippine Independence Day Art Exhibition held in Abu Dhabi. Moreover, his entry titled “Heroes without Capes” gained recognition when it was shortlisted in the Waterfront Market Art Competition in November 2020. Achievements like these reinforce his dedication to art and inspire him to persist in his pursuits, even amidst the demands of his professional career. The Philippines will always be his cherished home. While he maintains meaningful connections with the international art community, his primary focus is to stay engaged with the Philippine art scene and actively contribute to its evolution and growth. In addition to his personal artistic development, he is passionate about nurturing the next generation of artists. He strives to inspire young creatives by sharing his experiences, insights, and knowledge, hoping to empower them to find their own voices in the art world. Ultimately, he wants to leave behind a substantial body of work that people can appreciate for generations to come. He firmly believes that art possesses an extraordinary ability to connect individuals and communities, transcending boundaries and fostering understanding.

There’s even ‘going-out gear’! See the week’s top kit launches

It’s that time to highlight the clubs showing off their new looks. The attention to detail has stood out on several of the new shirts, for example. Check out OneFootball ’s roundup below and have your say on which one is the most beautiful. Porto 🇵🇹 After a burgundy away shirt, the current Portuguese champions will once again have blue as the standout color on their third kit. The “contemporary” concept brought in a predominant sky-blue shade, which gave it a modern look while respecting the club’s tradition. See more details here . Lyon 🇫🇷 Adidas has launched the new home shirts for Olympique Lyonnais and OL Lyonnes. References to the city’s historic coat of arms were subtly applied to the shirts’ vertical stripes. Stripes that are interrupted around the stomach area by a cut that mimics that same coat of arms. That is where the respective sponsors are placed. The sleeves have returned to blue, something traditional in the 1990s. Check out other details here . Newcastle 🏴 After a frustrating season, the Magpies will not have European competition to play in during 2026/2027. And their new shirt takes a different approach to the vertical stripes. Adidas opted for fragmented, asymmetrical bands, creating a “barcode” style. Another highlight is the sky blue applied around the collar and on the three stripes. Check out more about the launch here . Benfica 🇵🇹 The Eagles did not even secure a Champions League spot for 26/27 and will need to go through the playoffs to reach the UEL league phase. The ongoing revamp also includes a kit celebrating the 20th anniversary of Benfica Campus, the club’s training and development center. The traditional red stands out alongside graphic details inspired by the architecture of Benfica Campus. The white details appear only on the collar and in the color of the Adidas stripes. Another difference is the absence of black details. It is a “cleaner” shirt compared to last season’s. See more details here . Hull City 🏴 The long-dreamed-of return to the Premier League will come with plenty of style. The new shirt is made by OXEN Sports, a company from the city of Hull itself. And it pays tribute to the 1978-1979 season. The design is classic, with wide vertical amber and black stripes on the body and sleeves. One standout feature is the HCAFC lettering, which replaces the club crest on the shirt for the first time in 47 years. Check out other details here . Villarreal 🇪🇸 The Yellow Submarine finished behind only Barça and Real in the last LaLiga, securing a Champions League place. The highly traditional yellow is complemented by navy blue details in various parts of the shirt. That blue stood out in 25/26 thanks to the vertical stripe in the center of the shirt. The body, meanwhile, features a textured pattern inspired by the “movement of water.” Learn more about the launch here . Monaco 🇲🇨 The Principality club only managed to secure a place in the Conference League playoffs. But it has a new kit as it looks for a better 26/27. The traditional sash has gained subtle embossed stripes aligned with the diagonal. The collar has been redesigned in polo style. And decorated with the princely crown. Another highlight is the return of red shorts after four years. See more details here . This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. FIFA Forces Last-Minute Redesign of Haiti’s 2026 World Cup Kit Over Historical Artwork

Just days before their opening match at the FIFA World Cup 2026, Haiti’s national football team has been compelled to alter its official kit after football’s governing body rejected a historical design element referencing the country’s revolutionary past. The decision follows objections from FIFA over a visual motif on the right hip of the shirt inspired by the Battle of Vertières, a decisive 1803 confrontation that marked the final victory in Haiti’s war of independence. The artwork reportedly drew on imagery associated with the moment revolutionary leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines is said to have torn the white stripe from a French tricolour, symbolically helping to form the flag of what became the world’s first free Black republic. The historic reference is deeply embedded in Haitian national identity and is commemorated annually on May 18, a date widely associated with the country’s flag and unity celebrations. FIFA Cites Equipment Rules, Requests Design Changes Kit manufacturer Saeta confirmed it worked closely with FIFA to revise the design in line with regulatory requirements, stressing that the original concept was never intended to carry political messaging. “FIFA determined that certain visual elements could be interpreted differently under its equipment regulations and ultimately requested modifications,” the company said, adding that it had “respected the process and implemented the final requirements communicated by FIFA.” The manufacturer also maintained that the jersey was conceived as a tribute to Haitian society more broadly. “a tribute to the men and women who contribute every day to Haiti’s future” Design Adjustments, But Core Identity Intact Despite the controversy, Haiti’s tournament kits remain largely unchanged. The home, away, and third jerseys continue to feature the national colour palette—blue, white, and red—with red collars, sleeve accents, and the national crest prominently placed at the centre. The only alteration involves the removal of the contested graphic on the hip area, which had drawn FIFA’s concern ahead of the global tournament. Balancing Heritage and Regulation on Football’s Biggest Stage While the redesign has sparked attention due to its historical resonance, Saeta expressed pride in its involvement with Haiti’s World Cup campaign and extended its support to the team ahead of kickoff. “this historic moment for Haitian football” The episode highlights the often delicate balance between cultural expression and international sporting regulations, especially when national history and symbolism intersect with global branding rules enforced by FIFA. As Haiti prepares to take the field, the revised kit now carries the same national colours and identity—just without the contested tribute to one of the most defining chapters in its revolutionary history.

New York City and Mayor Zohran Mamdani Unveil Affordable NYC World Cup Jerseys

SummaryNew York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has launched a limited-run collection of NYC-inspired jerseys to celebrate the 2026 World CupThe grassroots apparel initiative features custom graphics designed by local illustrator Arsh Raziuddin and handmade production by Brooklyn's Mazzi SportsThe collection introduces three distinct city-inspired colorways retailing at cost to prioritize consumer accessibilityNew York City and Mayor Zohran Mamdani have officially launched the custom NYC World Cup Jersey collection as an affordable alternative for soccer fans. The grassroots merchandising project introduces a trio of community-focused kits designed to contrast with expensive official FIFA tournament apparel. Priced at just $50 USD, the jerseys are sold completely at cost to ensure maximum financial accessibility for residents across the five boroughs as the global tournament kicks off.The design of the New York City kits is deeply rooted in local infrastructure, subverting traditional tourist imagery to highlight authentic metropolitan life. Crafted by Brooklyn-based graphic designer and illustrator Arsh Raziuddin alongside City Hall's in-house team, the collection features iconic local motifs including a soccer-ball-patterned "Bapple" graphic below the left shoulder and a classic pigeon graphic on the right. The visual palette draws direct inspiration from the city's iconic public transportation and civic staples, infusing hues of subway green, taxi yellow, coffee cup blue, ferry orange, and thank you red.For manufacturing, the city bypassed global corporate factories to partner with Mazzi Sports, a family-owned custom apparel business that has been operating out of its Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn factory since 1986. The high-quality jerseys are being delivered in three main colorways: black and white, yellow and black, and blue and orange. This localized approach celebrates the rich football culture pulsing through the five boroughs, utilizing symbols of New York City's daily reality to form a lasting visual legacy for the sport's biggest international stage. The NYC World Cup Jersey collection drops June 12, 2026, exclusively at the New York City CityStore in downtown Manhattan. Jamiroquai’s JOURNAL STANDARD relume Fade Print T-Shirts Give Each Colorway Its Own Print Technology

SummaryJOURNAL STANDARD relume has launched a pre-order collaboration T-shirt with Jamiroquai, delivering mid-July 2026Each colorway receives a distinct print treatment: glow-in-the-dark pink print on Black, standard vintage finish on White, and three-dimensional flock print on YellowThe base is open-end jersey treated with a special softening process alongside fading and grinding to recreate the aged feel of vintage clothing, with each piece varying slightly in damage and textureJOURNAL STANDARD relume is once again teaming up with Jamiroquai for a collaborative collection. The three-colorway release assigns a distinct print technology to each color: a glow-in-the-dark pink print to Black, a standard vintage finish to White, and a three-dimensional flock print to yellow, building the collaboration's creative argument through material variation rather than a single graphic applied uniformly across all three. The construction starts at the base material and works outward. Open-end jersey provides the foundation — a fabric known for its firm, dry hand feel that gives the garment structure before any processing begins. A special softening treatment then works against that firmness, introducing a pliability that brings the jersey closer to the feel of a worn-in vintage piece. Fading and grinding processes follow, applying visual and tactile aging to the surface that recreates the depth of something worn over many years rather than the flat, even look of a new garment. Because these processes are applied manually rather than by machine uniformity, each piece will carry a slightly different degree of damage and texture — a variation the brand frames as a feature rather than an inconsistency. The print decisions layer on top of that base in three different directions. The Black colorway carries a vintage finish alongside a glow-in-the-dark print: a pink graphic that stores light in bright conditions and releases it as a faint glow in darkness. The glow weakens gradually with repeated washing, which means the Black tee's most distinctive feature has a lifespan rather than a fixed state. The White colorway receives the most straightforward treatment of the three, a vintage finish print that lets the aged base material carry the full visual weight. The Yellow B colorway introduces flock printing, a technique that builds three-dimensional texture directly into the graphic surface, giving the design a tactile dimension that neither the Black nor White versions have. Three colorways, three print technologies, one base material subjected to the same aging process — the collection rewards owning all three rather than picking one.The relaxed silhouette keeps the construction accessible. The width is balanced rather than oversized, sitting in a range that works both as a standalone piece and as a layering option. The staff note describes the Black colorway specifically as having a slightly grayish tint rather than a flat black, which is a direct consequence of the fading process and reflects what the open-end jersey base looks like after the aging treatments have been applied.Pre-orders for the Jamiroquai x JOURNAL STANDARD relume Fade Print T-Shirt collection are set to release mid-July. The Nike Cortez “Ironstone” Features a Widened Toebox

Name: Nike Cortez “Ironstone”Colorway: Ironstone/Black-Baroque BrownSKU: DM4044-005MSRP: ¥13,860 JPY ($90 USD)Release Date: Available now (Japan), TBC (Global)Where to Buy: BILLY’S ENT (Japan)Nike is updating the Cortez in an Ironstone/Black-Baroque Brown colorway. The silhouette, Nike's first shoe released in 1972, has been refreshed based on feedback with a wider toe box delivering improved comfort and fit while preserving the retro aesthetic that has kept it in continuous production for more than five decades. The toe box widening is the update's most functionally significant change. The original Cortez's narrow forefoot has historically been one of the silhouette's more polarizing fit characteristics, and broadening that zone without altering the shoe's overall profile addresses a specific complaint without redesigning the shoe around it. The upper retains the same material combination of natural leather, synthetic leather, and synthetic fiber that has defined recent Cortez iterations, giving the shoe a layered surface quality that keeps the retro construction legible while allowing for the color variety that each new colorway requires. The Ironstone/Black-Baroque Brown palette applies that layered material logic to a three-tone earthy combination. Ironstone, a muted grey-green, anchors the upper's base surfaces, with Black handling the overlays and branding details that give the silhouette its structural definition. Baroque Brown introduces warmth at specific points, providing the palette's most distinctive tonal departure and the detail that separates this colorway from a standard neutral two-tone. Together the three colors sit in a restrained range that suits the Cortez's 1972 runner heritage without reaching for the brighter, more graphic colorways the silhouette has also carried over the years. The Cortez's place in Nike's history gives any updated version a context that most silhouette refreshes do not carry. As Nike's first shoe, it preceded the Waffle Racer, the Air Max, and everything that followed, making its design decisions formative rather than derivative. The toe box widening acknowledges that the original fit parameters were not universally optimal while respecting the design's fundamental character. It is a conservative update by any measure, but conservatism is appropriate when the silhouette being adjusted is the one that started everything. Click here to view full gallery at Hypebeast

Why Information Continuity Matters in Contemporary Architecture

Unlike many other activities that now take place entirely in digital environments, the final result of work in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry does not remain on a screen. Files become buildings, models transform into structures, and decisions made during the design process ultimately shape streets, neighborhoods, and entire cities. A building often lasts for decades, sometimes centuries, and the impacts of the choices made during its development extend far beyond the moment of delivery, influencing the daily lives of thousands of people.

Artist Charlotte Hailstone Wu unveils large-scale public sculpture 'Afterglow' at Flatiron Nomad Plaza

Charlotte Hailstone Wu , in collaboration with AG Art Designs , is presenting “Afterglow”, a large-scale sculptural seasonally driven frame installation at the Flatiron NoMad Plaza, through the Flatiron Nomad Partnership . The work marks Hailstone Wu’s first major sculptural commission in a public space, and an extension of the optical and material questions that have defined her painting practice. Made from transparent plexiglass, the installation transforms the Flatiron NoMad Frame into an interactive light sculpture. The acrylic elements allow views of the Flatiron Building and surrounding streetscape to remain visible while casting shifting colored shadows across the plaza as sunlight moves throughout the day. The result is a vibrant, public structure that changes by the hour and invites en

Hong Kong animations are finally turning heads. Meet the artists behind them

Animated features – particularly blockbusters from the likes of Studio Ghibli and Pixar – have long been popular in Hong Kong. Yet the city is not known for producing works of its own in the genre. This may change, as a small number of local artists, educators and filmmakers are patiently making waves on the international festival circuit with experimental animations. For example, in 2025, the Hong Kong animated dark fantasy film Another World by Point Five Creations was released to critical...

Comsewogue Public Library kicks off its Summer Reading Program with festival

By Caroline O’Callaghan The Comsewogue Public Library hosted its annual Summer Kick Off festival on June 6. The annual event served as the start to its Summer Reading Program – for folks of all ages – complete with petting zoos, ice cream trucks, crafts, vendors, face painting, inflatable rides and staff tables for easy access to signing up for the program. Members of the Comsewogue community flocked out to enjoy and support their local library, as well as explore some exciting, new technology that was on display. The Summer Reading Program is divided into children, teens, and adults. Between June and mid-August, members record their reading times to win prizes and raffle tickets. There are different events for each age group such as a DJ Dance Party and Teen Challenge After Dark – a fun game where teens get to explore the library after hours. Adults will receive Italian herb kits and be eligible for themed raffle baskets, curated with a variety of different items from local businesses. “This is one of the best days!” said Christina Heaney, head of Children’s & Teen’s Services. She described some of the exciting prizes available to the reading club members, “For our children’s reading club, they’re getting squishmallows when they read all their minutes, and coupons to local eateries. For the teens, they get the children’s prizes as well as raffle baskets with items from local businesses who have graciously contributed.” Although the program is meant to encourage reading, Comsewogue library staff are adamant that there’s something for everyone to take away. “We want the community to see what we have to offer. So, all of our services are here in the forefront – Library of Things (items the public can take out), games, programs and services – we aim to educate the community,” said Andrea Malchiodi, assistant director. A major service on display was the new 3D-printing station aptly named “The ( ) Space.” Along with conventional 3D-printing, which creates physical 3D objects from digital designs, Malchiodi emphasized how the printer can be used for edible printing on surfaces too. Malchiodi continued, “Every service that you use has a software that’s attached to it, so you’re learning that software in order to be able to do this. Instead of just requesting something to go on your cake, you’re actually learning how to use Canva [a graphic design tool].” There will be a large community colorsheet for guests of the Comsewogue Public Library to fill out this summer, along with book displays which transfer over the universal theme of this Summer Reading Program, “Unearth a Story” – a reference to excavating dinosaur fossils (in this case, to “unearth” a love for reading). Loretta Holtz is the head of Adult Services at Comsewogue and enjoys how the summer events reintroduce the library’s essential and diverse services to the entire community. “The library isn’t just a place to check out books, it’s a community center and a place where patrons can come and have a wide variety of experiences. It’s not just about knowledge, it’s about entertainment, learning new skills, technologies and an opportunity for people to actually get help from a real person,” said Holtz. “This event helps to bring people in so we can show how the library is a meeting place and the ‘anchor’ of this area.” — All photos by Caroline O’Callaghan
